DNCC alerts tax evaders about potential legal consequences

B Mirror Desk : The DNCC cautions tax defaulters about potential legal repercussions. DNCC Administrator Mohammad Azaz issued a warning on Sunday to influential individuals, stating that necessary actions will be taken if they fail to settle their outstanding taxes and dues.

According to a statement from the DNCC quoting Mr. Azaz, ‘If they do not pay their taxes, DNCC officials will visit their homes and initiate legal proceedings.’ This warning was made during the inauguration of the ‘Municipal Tax Fair 2025’ at the DNCC Zone 3 office in Mohakhali. Mr. Azaz noted that the payment processes for various municipal taxes and services have been streamlined with the introduction of an online payment system. ‘Public hearings have revealed that tax collections from citizens are significantly lower than their requests for infrastructure improvements such as roads and drainage,’ he stated.

He also highlighted that the city corporation offers various services to all citizens, including those who do not pay taxes. Many corporate entities, including five-star hotels, private universities, and hospitals, fail to pay taxes despite benefiting from the highest level of services provided by the DNCC.

Addressing the ongoing issues regarding permanent employees of the DNCC, he emphasized the need for sufficient tax revenue to ensure their salaries and secure their positions. ‘In light of the need to mobilize additional resources for these expenses, the DNCC has organized the municipal tax fair,’ the Administrator remarked. He mentioned that approximately 25,000 individuals owe arrears of Tk 100,000 each, while many others remain off the tax rolls. The DNCC’s Municipal Tax Fair 2025 will run until May 30 at various locations across its 10 zones, offering citizens a 7.5 percent rebate at the fairs.
