Building a Safe Haven: The ICBC Project Ensures Children’s Safety

Through the ICBC project, the environment for children to grow up without fear is being ensured in a secure environment

Bangladesh Shishu Academy under the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs is implementing the “Early Child Development and Protection and Swimming Facility (ICBC) Project through Community Based Integrated Child Care Centers” in 45 upazilas of 16 districts of Bangladesh. Center for Injury Prevention and Research, Bangladesh (CIPRB) has organized a seminar to share the findings of the project’s baseline survey and knowledge, attitude and practice analysis with stakeholders. Bangladesh Shishu Academy and Synergos Bangladesh were in cooperation.
Mr. Sharmin S., Honorable Advisor to the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs was present as the chief guest in the seminar. murshid Representatives of policy makers, representatives of projects implementing drowning prevention programs, representatives of development aid agencies, community representatives, media representatives and representatives of domestic and international non-governmental organizations working for children participated in the seminar.
Mr. Md. Abdul Qadir, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs and Project Director of ICBC Project gave a welcome speech on the occasion.
Chief guest Mr. Sharmin S. Murshid, Hon’ble Adviser, Ministry of Women and Child Affairs, in his speech said, “The overall welfare of children is one of the goals of the government which the role of ICBC project is very important to fulfill. This project will be another example for other big projects as it has ensured environment for children to grow up without fear in a safe environment.” He urged to take initiatives on how to keep the children of districts which are outside the scope of this project safe.
Special guest Mr. Momtaz Ahmed, Senior Secretary, Ministry of Women and Child Affairs in his speech said, “It is necessary to continue the ICBC project and spread it across the country to build a secure life for the future generation of the nation.”
Kelly Larson, Director – Public Health, Bloomberg Philanthropies, said, “Government efforts and collaboration will strengthen child protection programs when all stakeholders work together. Bloomberg Philanthropies is grateful to support this government initiative to keep children safe.”
Dr. Manzoor Ahmed, Chair Person, Bangladesh Early Child Development Network, said, “The ICBC project is one of the most effective collective steps to ensure a bright future for children. There is a great need to have a comprehensive Child Development Policy to guide organizations working in child development.” For this purpose, he drew the attention of the concerned persons.
Mr. Esha Hossain, Country Director, Synergos Bangladash said, “The ICBC project is an effective matching of public and private initiatives.” He highlighted the various achievements of the project so far and recommended the need for its second phase to be implemented.
Presented the main article in the seminar, Dr. Aminur Rahman, Deputy Executive Director, CIPRB. She presented the results of a survey of her main caregiver’s knowledge, attitudes and behaviors about childcare. This includes the overall condition of children, including proper care, good health, adequate nutrition, safety and security, and death from drowning and other injuries. Effective ways to improve these issues are also discussed in the presentation.
Director General of Bangladesh Shishu Academy and Joint Secretary of Ministry of Women and Child Affairs Mr. Dilara Begum gave the closing speech of the program. At the same time, he expressed hope that the recommendations of the guests who participated in the event will serve as a path to take the project forward. For this purpose, he asked for sincere cooperation from all the concerned institutions and announced the end of the program by thanking everyone.
