BMDesk:According to Trade Advisor Sheikh Bashiruddin, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government, will speak with the US directly about the US tariffs. After an emergency meeting at the State Guest House Jamuna on Saturday night (April 5), he told reporters.“He (the chief advisor) is currently our greatest asset and the situation will be handled by exploiting his international acceptance,” the trade advisor stated. He stated that attempts will be made to increase imports in order to decrease the imbalance with the United States. Although the ready-made clothing industry won’t be impacted, new opportunities might arise.
At the same time, the chief advisor’s High Representative Dr. Khalilur Rahman said, the interim government will take the next decision after discussing with the United States on the issue of imposing additional tariffs on Bangladesh’s export products.
Earlier, the meeting that began at around 7:30 pm was attended by top experts and concerned officials along with the concerned advisors.
It is worth noting that US President Donald Trump has announced tariffs on various countries. Among them, a 37 percent tariff has been imposed on Bangladesh’s exports. This is seen as a major blow to the country’s main export sector, the garment industry.
