Six factories located in Chittagong have been announced to be closed by the controversial business group S Alam Group. S Alam Cold Rolled Steels Limited is one of them that is traded on the stock exchange.
On Tuesday, December 24, at noon, the factory posted a notice of closure. When the workers realized this, they protested right away. The officials tried to comfort them, though, by stating that if things get better, the factory will open again.
The S Alam Group’s head of administration and human resources, Muhammad Borhan Uddin, signed the notice, which stated that the factories will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, until further notice for unavoidable reasons in accordance with the directives of the authorities. The factory’s emergency, supply, and safety departments will stay open, though.
S Alam Cold Rolled Steels Limited and S Alam Refined Sugar Industries, S Alam Power Plant Limited, S Alam Cold Rolled Steels Limited-Noff, S Alam Power Generation Limited, and Infinity CR Strips Industries Limited are the six factories that have been announced for closure. . Among them, two are located in Kalarpool, three in Ichanagar and one in Banshkhali of Karnaphuli upazila of Chittagong.
At 3.30 pm today, S Alam Cold Rolled Steels Ltd. was seen in Kallarpool area, hundreds of workers were protesting inside the factory. They said that they were in trouble with their families as the factory was announced to be closed on a sudden notice.
A security inspector of S Alam Cold Rolled Steels Limited named Mohammad Yunus said, “There is no official to talk to, so you cannot go inside.”
However, Nazim Uddin, production manager of S Alam Cold Rolled Steels Limited, said, “Even though everything is going on normally in our factory, a sudden holiday notice has been given. I don’t know why they gave me a general holiday. We fell from the sky in this situation.
