The United States has reiterated its commitment to advocating for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Myanmar, aiming for the safe return of Rohingyas and others displaced by violence. Until that goal is achieved, the US assures Bangladesh of its unwavering support in the Rohingya refugee humanitarian response.

During a briefing at the American Centre on Wednesday, Mackenzie Rowe, the Regional Refugee Coordinator at the US Embassy, emphasized the US’s dedication to the cause. “Bangladesh should know that the United States will remain a steadfast partner in the Rohingya refugee humanitarian response,” Rowe stated.

Addressing concerns about conditions within the refugee camps, Rowe acknowledged that any issues affecting humanitarian assistance are significant to the US. She stressed the importance of collaboration with partners to address these challenges effectively.

The United States stands as the largest donor of humanitarian assistance to those impacted by the Rohingya refugee crisis in Myanmar, Bangladesh, and the surrounding region. Since August 2017, US funding for the crisis has reached nearly $2.4 billion, with nearly $1.9 billion directed towards supporting refugees and host communities in Bangladesh alone.

Rowe highlighted the international community’s solidarity with Bangladesh, thanking the people and government for their generosity in hosting over 1.3 million Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char. “Bangladesh does not stand alone. The United States, along with many other governments, UN agencies, and NGOs, are partnering with you to assist the Rohingya refugees,” she affirmed.

The US continues to work closely with Bangladesh and other international entities to ensure that the Rohingyas receive necessary support until they can safely and voluntarily return to their homeland.
