250 Factories’ Exports at Risk: BGMEA

BM Desk :The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President, Mahmud Hasan Khan, stated, “At this time, we do not have exact information on the magnitude of the damage.” Nonetheless, the majority of our member factories often transport their products via air. Every day, on average, 200 to 250 factories ship their goods. We are concerned that this number of factories might have been impacted as a result.

He made these remarks on Friday (October 18) while speaking about the potential losses caused by the fire at the cargo village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Mahmud Hasan Khan added, “Even if the airport is closed temporarily, exporters will suffer losses. If it reopens soon, the losses will be minimal. But if the closure continues for a longer period, the losses will be significant.”

SM Jahangir Hossain, President of the Bangladesh Fruits, Vegetables & Allied Products Exporters’ Association (BFVAPEA), said, “We don’t have a large volume of goods every day. The quantity of goods we can send depends on the availability of space on flights. On days we get more space, we can send more products. We are currently checking how much product our members had today.”

Jahangir Hossain further said, “Since these are perishable goods, we want air transport to resume as soon as possible. That way, the goods in the export pipeline won’t spoil.”
