Protest by Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall Students Following Ceiling Collapse Incident, Three Demands Presented

DU Correspondent: A student of the 2018–19 academic session, Masud Rana, was injured when plaster from the ceiling of Room 204 in the main building of Dhaka University’s Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall fell on him while he was sleeping. In protest of this incident, the residential students of the hall organized a demonstration, presenting three demands.
The students raised these demands during a protest march that started from Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall and ended at the base of the Raju sculpture.
On behalf of the students, three demands were outlined by Sadiq, the General Secretary of the Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall Debating Club. He stated, “In this situation, for the safety of students’ lives, we are presenting the following demands:
1. Immediate arrangements must be made to construct a new building for the historic Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall. Within the next seven days, the university administration must issue an official statement with a clear timeline, and construction must commence within one month.
2. Until the new building is constructed, the number of student allotments in the hall must be reduced.
3. For the safety of students, necessary renovations must be carried out until the new building is completed. To this end, a special task force consisting of relevant experts, the university’s engineering department, the treasurer’s office, the estate office, and hall administration must be formed to begin renovation work within the next three days.”
Sadequl Rahman Sani, another resident of the hall, added, “Dhaka University has an annual budget of thousands of crores of taka, yet no new hall is constructed. Most rooms in Mohsin Hall are unsafe, but no plans for new buildings have been announced. Hundreds of residential students are living here, risking their lives. We don’t want a tragedy like the one in Jagannath Hall. We demand a safe residential hall and better facilities for studying.”
Mehedi Hasan, the president of the Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall Debating Club, said, “People in Bangladesh hang mosquito nets to avoid mosquitoes, but students in Mohsin Hall hang them not just for that but also to avoid falling plaster from the ceiling above them.”
“Mohsin Hall is a historic building. It was here that the slogan ‘Ami ke? Tumi ke? Razakar, Razakar’ (Who am I? Who are you? Collaborators, collaborators) was first raised. Our clear demand is for renovation work to be conducted in Mohsin Hall. No significant renovation has been done here for many days , including the hall auditorium.”
It should be noted that as of 4 PM during the writing of this report, the students of the hall went to submit a memorandum to Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan. However, during the protest, they were met by Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Saima Haque Bidisha and Treasurer Professor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, who held discussions with them.
Professor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said to the students, “The Vice-Chancellor is attending a meeting with the UGC. Until he arrives, we will continue our discussion.”
