Bangladesh and India are set to reveal a pivotal “vision statement” on Saturday, outlining the future direction of their bilateral relations. This announcement is expected to solidify the bond between the two neighboring nations.
Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen, speaking in New Delhi on Friday, highlighted the importance of this development. He also hinted at a significant announcement regarding Teesta water conservation and management, noting India’s keen interest in this area.
“There are investment opportunities in relevant projects centering around the Teesta River,” Momen stated.
Although discussions covered over a dozen potential Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements, the two countries are likely to sign nine to ten bilateral instruments on Saturday.
“This visit is very important for us; it’s the first state visit from a neighboring country. Both sides have high expectations because the relationship is so special and friendly,” said Randhir Jaiswal, Spokesperson for the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, during a media briefing in New Delhi.
Jaiswal added that more details about the discussions, MoUs, and agreements would be shared in a press engagement scheduled for 3 PM on Saturday.
“Both sides are committed to deepening and strengthening this very special partnership with Bangladesh,” he emphasized.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh is currently on a two-day state visit to India at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This is the first bilateral state visit to India since the formation of the new government following the 18th Lok Sabha elections.
During her visit, Prime Minister Hasina will hold bilateral consultations with Prime Minister Modi, and is also scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar.
Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar underscored the significance of Prime Minister Hasina’s visit, highlighting the “close and abiding” ties between the two countries.
“Delighted to call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh this evening. Appreciate her guidance on the further development of our special partnership,” Jaishankar shared after their meeting at the Hotel Taj Palace in New Delhi.
He further expressed on social media that Bangladesh is a key partner and trusted neighbor of India, and that the visit will significantly boost the celebrated bilateral partnership.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s delegation includes Private Industries and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman and Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen.
Prime Minister Hasina was among the international leaders who attended the swearing-in ceremony of PM Modi and the Union Council of Ministers on June 9.
