Australian and Spanish brands to continue apparel sourcing from Bangladesh

Australian and Spanish retail clothing brands decided continue sourcing apparel from Bangladesh following the Bangladesh government request.

Earlier the Bangladesh government requested European Parliament and USTR to use their influence try to persuade European and US clothing brands to be more sensitive in scraping buying order during COVID-19.

In separate letters to European Parliament chair Brend Lange and United States Trade representatives (USTR) Robert E. Lighthizer, Commerce Secretary complained about billion dollars cancellation by EU and US high street retailers.

Such unbearable, uncompassionate action by some European and US clothing brands does not go with the idea of ethical and value based trade as propagated by the EU and USTR, the letter said.

US and EU retailers cancelled about US$3.2 billion orders of over 1100 garment factories.

The Bangladesh Readymade Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) claimed that this order cancellation has put forward over 2.28 million job in threat and many of them have sent home unpaid.

Most of the economy remain closed until May 30, but the government has been unable to hold stop clothing factories.
