Garment workers staged a road blockade in the Kachukhet area of Mirpur on Tuesday morning, protesting the closure of a garment factory and causing significant traffic disruption during peak office hours.
According to police, workers of Uniform Textile, located at Tamanna Complex in Kachukhet, began their protest at around 9:15 am by forming a human chain and blocking one side of the road. Later, they expanded the demonstration to both sides of the roadway, bringing traffic movement to a complete halt.
The blockade continued until approximately 10:30 am, resulting in severe congestion and inconvenience for commuters heading to work.
Tania Sultana, Assistant Commissioner of the Pallabi Traffic Zone, said the workers were protesting the shutdown of the factory. She added that traffic remained suspended for about an hour before law enforcement officials persuaded the demonstrators to leave the road.
“After discussions with the workers, they withdrew from the roadway, and traffic resumed in both directions. The situation is now normal,” she said.
Authorities did not immediately provide details regarding the reasons behind the factory’s closure or the workers’ specific demands.
