Kushtia District Correspondent: Farmers in Daulatpur, Kushtia, are busy cultivating various crops on the vast char lands of the Padma River to recover losses caused by recent floods. As soon as the floodwaters receded, they began preparing the land and sowing seeds to grow golden crops. To help offset the losses, the Agriculture Department has assured char farmers of incentives and all kinds of support.
During the current Rabi season, farmers are fully engaged in cultivating a variety of crops on the extensive char lands of Daulatpur. They are working tirelessly to turn the flood-affected lands into a bounty of golden harvests. This season, crops including wheat, lentils, maize, mustard, potatoes, onions, garlic, and peas have been cultivated on 12,530 hectares of char land, which accounts for nearly half of the total arable land. Farmers are hopeful for a good yield if the weather remains favorable.
Sohel Hossain, a farmer from Charpara village in Ramkrishnapur Union, said that during floods, the Padma’s char lands are submerged and no crops grow during that time. Many farmers, including him, suffer losses when crops are destroyed by floodwaters. Once the waters recede, farmers immediately get busy cultivating various crops to recover their losses. He mentioned that wheat, lentils, maize, mustard, potatoes, onions, garlic, peas, and vegetables are being grown on the Padma char lands. The cash crop onions have already started being harvested, and farmers are getting good prices. He also expects good yields from other crops.
Out of a total 32,350 hectares of arable land in Daulatpur, 12,530 hectares are on the Padma char lands, which are submerged during floods. Once the floodwaters recede, farmers quickly get busy planting Rabi crops. Rehena Parvin, Upazila Agriculture Officer of Daulatpur, said that in addition to providing incentives, all types of support will be given to these hardworking farmers who cultivate golden crops. Supporting them comprehensively will strengthen agriculture and reduce dependency on imports.
