Abnormal use of plastic bags, identified as a serious threat to the environment, has emerged in various studies. “5 trillion plastic bags are used worldwide every year,” the study was quoted as saying at a conference on International Plastic Bag Free Day on Friday (July 3rd). That number is 1 lakh 70 thousand per second. More than 600 bags are used per person per year. ”
International Plastic Bag Free Day was observed on Friday, demanding the immediate implementation of global sanctions laws. Nazma Ahmed, an official of the Environment and Social Development Organization (ASDO) presented the research report at a webinar organized on the occasion of the day.
He said the Earth Policy Institute uses about 2 million plastic bags per minute worldwide. Most of these are discarded and recycled in less than 1 percent. Plastic bags are used for an average of 12 minutes. But it kills 10,000 marine animals annually. About 1 million seabirds also die due to plastic pollution.
Nazma Ahmed said that 10 per cent of the plastic produced worldwide is deposited in the sea every year, adding that “80 per cent of it goes to the bottom of the sea, where it will probably never run out.” The seminar was attended by about 50 youth representatives from different countries of the world, most of whom are from Bangladesh, Nepal, Kenya and Belgium.
Through the seminar, they expressed solidarity with the efforts to ban plastic bags and eliminate disposable plastics worldwide. Esdo Secretary General. Shahriar Hossain said at the seminar, “Billions of plastic bags are dumped in the sea every year as garbage and these bags are made of polypropylene. Polypropylene is a material made from petroleum and natural gas.
“Both of these substances are based on fossil fuels and during emission and production they emit greenhouse gases, which contribute to global climate change and are also very harmful to the environment and human health.”
